So what’s the bar like? Well it has a retro hair salon vibe where the bar tenders are super cool and the music ranges from old school do-wop to underground hip-hop.

Baker Street Pub: Sherlock Holmes Would Have Loved This Place

221B Baker St. in London, is the legendary residence of one of literatures greatest (fictional) detectives; Sherlock Holmes. The address itself never really did exist (although that didn’t stop people from sending fan mail to it) until 1990 when the Westminster City Council gave the address to the Sherlock Holmes Museum to add to the allure, but the pub located on 1st ave. and 63rd st. in NYC is very much real, and pretty decent drinking hang out as well.

Our version of Baker Street has an interesting past of its own as well. Believe it or not, this was the site of the first ever TGI Fridays, and even more interesting, it is also one of the locations that was used to film the classic Tom Cruise film; “Cocktail”. Today though, Baker takes on more of an Irish pub feel. In fact, if there is a football (soccer) match, or Rugby match on a particular day, you will find this place packed with fans, enjoying pints of Guinness, while supporting their clubs.

In terms of drink selection, Baker has a pretty standard tap system with all the regulars; Guinness, Bass, Yuengling, Bud, etc., and they have all the standard liquor selections as well. You will find a decent happy hour here; 2 for 1 well drinks, select drafts and wine – and $1.00 off everything else (Mon-Fri/4:00pm -7:00pm). Baker Street also has pretty decent food, including a delicious Irish breakfast that is served all day, along with one of the best French Onion soups you can get in the city.

So whether you are winding down from a long day of work, getting ready to hit the town for a night of fun, or solving a mystery for the Baskervilles, Baker Street Pub is a highly recommended Upper Eastside pub that would make even Mr. Holmes quite proud.

The 34^th st./Herald Square area of NYC is known for many things, Madison Square Garden, Penn Station, and “The” Macy’s are few that immediately come to mind. Whether you are there to see a Knick…I mean Ranger game, hopping on a train out of the city, or there to visit Santa Clause around Christmas time, we can all agree on one thing; the bars in that area are expensive….very expensive.

However, take a short walk down 33^rd st, and you will find an Irish pub that is one of the coolest spots in the city to grab a drink. There might not be a single spot in this bar that isn’t covered in some form of sport memorabilia, mostly baseball to be more specific. Above the bar you will see actual seats from stadiums such as Shea, Camden Yards, the Vet and even old Yankee stadium, and that is something that no other bar in New York City can say they have on display. It doesn’t stop there either, the walls are adorned with signed baseball from legends of yesterday, and even the bathrooms are covered with old newspaper headlines from some of the most notable moments in all of baseball.

It’s not just baseball that is on display though, you will also see memorabilia from boxing, soccer and even a signed Ray Bourque jersey proudly displayed (for those of you who don’t know who that is…he might very well be the best defender to ever play in the NHL). You will also find a nice assortment of Football memorabilia on display as well, for all you NFL fanatics.

Now one of the best parts about this sports shrine that is a bar, is that the prices are very decent for the area. You will find a various selection of daily specials, but one that sticks out the most is the 24/7 deal that lets you enjoy five Yuengling Lagers for only $15.00. $3.00 for a bottle of Yuengling in midtown Manhattan? No, you get out of town! The food here is also quite good, and the spicy garlic chicken wings are highly recommended, as well as the flat bread pizzas.

Overall, Foley’s is a very unique bar in a very un-unique section of town. The prices are low, the food is good, and the atmosphere is all about sports….what more could you want?

Imagine a bar that is cheap, has friendly staff and is made primarily of red electrical tape. If you imagined Rudy’s Bar and Grill, you would be right. Rudy’s is the proverbial needle hidden in the equally proverbial haystack known as Manhattan. Seriously, where else can you drink $7.00 pitchers while eating free hot dogs in this city?

What really makes Rudy’s special isn’t just the cheap beer and free food, but it’s also because they employ some of the friendliest staff around. Bartenders who actually thank you for tips? Well, wake up Cinderella, because that is what happens here. Even the bouncer who is a mountain of a man actually makes the male patrons act like gentlemen (so you better open the door for your lady friends..he will call you out on that). Remarkably, he also enforces the collegiate rule of “party fouls”.

What is the “party foul” rule? Well, an example here would be when a very drunken patron one time knocked over someone else’s pitcher. The Bouncer escorted the man to the bar and said, “whatever you spilled, your buying a new one of”, and when a guy the size of a Sherman tank tells you to buy a replacement, you do. In a city where chivalry and manners are fleeting, it’s nice to know that Rudy’s encourages it.

Rudy’s is also popular because they don’t allow “shit music” to play out of their online Juke Box. When you hear “Mmm Bop” by Hanson come on thanks to some joker in the establishment, you can rest assured that it will get skipped.

For the most part, Rudy’s has a mix of various locals, tourists, old alcoholics, young drunks and everyone in between, because people from every walk of life love cheap beer. So if you haven’t been to Rudy’s, then do yourself the favor and find the little red bar in “Hell’s Kitchen” for the time of your life, but get there early because it will get packed.

The Blarney Stone: Proof that Midtown East can be cheap!

If heaven is cheap delicious beer and a heart attack inducing sandwich, then The Blarney Stone is heaven. Boasting 20 oz. beers for $4, this place is a find for Midtown East in Manhattan, and that price is not just for Bud and Bud Light – it also covers Sam Adams, Killians and Goose Island to name a few. $13 pitchers also make this a worthwhile visit. Where else are you going to get a pitcher of Hoegaarden for $13? Not the Astoria “Beer Garden”, that’s for sure. You can also find a “holiday special” that consist of $7 buckets of Budweiser, and this holiday special seemingly means every single holiday ever conceived, because it never ends.

The Blarney Stone also has some of the friendliest bartenders around, who are always attentive to your drink, never leaving you stranded with an empty glass, wishing you had another beer right away. To say that The Blarney stone is a real gem, would be an understatement. Most of the food on the menu is less than $7 too! We are talking about delicious burgers, fish and chips, homemade pulled pork sandwiches and even steaks!

The bar that is over 80 years old still manages to be one of the most inexpensive watering holes in one of the most expensive areas of the world, that in itself is amazing. When I Lush New York found The Blarney Stone, the luck of the Irish was prominent that day indeed.

99% of our generation remembers one of the greatest baseball movies ever made; The Sandlot. In The Sandlot, Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez has a dream where Babe Ruth comes to him to give him guidance on how to get an autographed ball (signed by the bambino himself) from a monstrous dog who hijacked it. During the Babe’s speech, he says “Heros are remembered, but legends never die”, now I know this isn’t supposed to be a movie recap, and it’s not going to be one, but that quote makes me think of one of the most legendary drinks ever conceived; the Johnny Jump Up.

The Johnny Jump Up is an Irish beverage that originated in Youghal, a town located in County Cork, Ireland, during World War II. The drink itself is made up of 2 shots of Jameson (or a similar Irish Whiskey) combined with the remainder of the pint being filled with Magners (or a similar hard cider). The result is a drink that while sweet and easy to drink, it also packs one mean punch after a few pints.

The potency of a Johnny Jump Up comes from the fact that you really don’t taste anything in terms of hard alcohol, thus you have two or three of them…not realizing what is about to happen. The combination turns powerful after a few, and before you know it, you have met the ground face first.

The drink is so renowned that it has been made into a very famous Irish folk song, warning those who dare drink a pint or two what the effects might be (with a dash or two of Irish storytelling involved as well).

A Johnny Jump Up is not for the meek and frail, but it is something that is fun to try and worth a taste. Be wary though, you might just find the song has more truth to it than you might think.

McSorley's Old Ale House: The Oldest Irish Pub in NYC

Not only is McSorley's one of the oldest bars in New York, it's also one of the best. Opened in 1854, McSorley's has carried the time honored tradition of helping New Yorkers and visitors alike get sloshed every day and night.

One of the most unique things about McSorley's is that it only serves a "light" and "dark” style beer. Also, you can only order beers in pairs and due to very limited seating, coupled with an always packed house, it is encouraged that you drink the pints very quickly - and keeping them coming.

You can spend hours just looking at all the amazing old relics that grace the walls; from Harry Houdini’s handcuffs to an actual newspaper reporting on the tragedy of the Titanic. You may also notice that the floor is covered in sawdust, which according to the bartenders, is there to soak up the blood and vomit (something that was much more common in years past).

So, if you are interested in being a part of New York's storied history, then McSorley's is highly recommended - so come in, enjoy the one of the most interesting atmospheres in all of New York.

I Lush New York's Quest for the Mug Club at Rattle N' Hum

This weekend is an exciting time for myself and Todd, primarily because we start the quest to complete Rattle N' Hum's challenge and join their "Mug Club"

For those who are unfamiliar with Rattle N' Hum, it is a remarkable bar that features around 40 beers on tap….and all of them are a micro-brew. If you are one of those who only drinks Budweiser or Coors, you should just leave this bar to the professionals as it lives by its motto ; “No crap on tap”. If you are finally sick and tired of the bland flavors of the major beer companies, then by all means, stop into Rattle N’ Hum, enjoy a pint or two, and join in their “craft beer revolution”!

One of the best features of Rattle N’ Hum is the chance for any patron to join the Mug Club. How do you do this? Well you come in, get the official form and start drinking, and you better start and start quickly, because you only have one month to indulge in 40 different types of beer. Sure, it may seem like plenty of time, but when you do stumble across a perfect beer, it’s hard to say no to another one and continuing on your challenge. Sometimes you just can’t help but stick to just one beautifully full flavored beer all night, your taste buds are seemingly holding you hostage, not letting you proceed…it can be that good. Too often we throw around the word “best”, especially when it pertains to bars and beers. However, if you were to take a drive and head west to the “once upon a time” camera capital of the world known as Rochester, NY, you will find one of the absolute best Irish pubs on the east coast, if not the entire United States; Caverly’s Irish Pub.

Situated on the outskirts of downtown Rochester, Caverly’s is a relatively young bar, being founded in 2005 by owner Dan Caverly. The bar itself though carries a very old world Irish vibe to it, the walls are adorned with vintage pictures and posters of Ireland’s favorite exports (Guinness and Jameson to give examples), as well as scenic photos of the Emerald Isle’s lush countryside and beautiful cliff strewn coast lines. Caverly’s also boasts a nice outside seating area that is perfect for warm summer days and nights.

Also keeping with the tradition of a real Irish Pub, you will find some of the friendliest patrons around. They are happy to share stories, listen to others, sing along to the Irish tunes that play out of the jukebox and share in a laugh of two. The bartenders themselves share in this as well. You will be hard pressed to find better ones anywhere in the world, and that is not an exaggeration. They are just as friendly as the patrons, and even more so attentive to your drinking needs. One of the biggest things that sticks out in this category is their ability to pour a Guinness.

Guinness is one of the most enjoyable beers in the world if it is poured correctly. The sweet and bitter combinations, the smoothness, the trademark thick head and its distinct flavor all make more than just a drink, it makes it an experience. However, if you have one poured wrong by a bartender who is more concerned with his/her weekend plans than your drink, it can be one of the most unenjoyable experiences as well. Alas, you will never have to endure the bad, as this bar staff knows exactly how to pour it and it might be the best pour this side of the Atlantic. If you are a Guinness lover, and can’t get enough of what some call “the other black gold”, then Caverly’s is hands down the best place to enjoy it.

One of the other aspects that make Caverly’s feel so different than most other Irish Pubs is the fact that the owner, Dan Caverly, is more times than not sitting with the locals, joking , laughing and enjoying himself. Dan is one of the friendliest bar owners around, and this really adds to the experience and the theme of an authentic Irish Pub. Remember, a “pub” is supposed to be a meeting place, a place to share stories and laughs with friends, neighbors, and this is what you will find here.

Caverly’s is also a great spot to listen to traditional Irish music, as many weekends they have live bands come and play. Some of the bands bring in quite a large following such as “The Wild Geese” and “The Foggy Dudes”. On Thursday’s in particular you can come in, enjoy a pint and listen to a round table Irish jam, something that may be common in the pubs of Ireland, but not so common in towns and cities across America, which makes Caverly’s a very unique pub, with quite an authentic feel to it. The pub does get quite crowded when there is live music, and the patrons are very lively. Expect singing, clapping along and even a few attempts at an Irish jig as they enjoy their perfect pours of Guinness and the company of those around them.

Overall Caverly’s is one of the best Irish pubs around tody, it may be in Western New York, it will make you feel like you have “crossed the pond” and settled into a small town pub in the land of fairies, leprechauns and shamrocks.

There is a Gaelic saying that goes; Céad Míle Fáilte, which translates to “One hundred thousand welcomes”, and that is something you will always find at Caverly’s Irish Pub. Sláinte.

I LUSH CHEAP SHOTS

Today i woke up with a hang over, I lay they my head throbbing and i think how did this happen then i realized oh, yea i when to cheap shots last night. The picture is pretty what a night at cheap shots is like, hot bartenders are dancing on the bar and everything else is pretty blurry. I love cheap things especially cheap booze so me and cheap shots where a match made in heaven. Pitchers there are $6.50 that's right Six Fifhty for a Pitcher, that's the cheapest pitcher price i've come across in new york. Shots are $3 dollars and these are real shots not those mixed super sweet candy crap shots. What kind of people go to cheap shots? people who want to get sloshed for less than 8 bucks, that's who. Some say Cheap Shots is "Filthy" well i say as long as your not licking the urinal who cares how "filthy" a bar is as long as the drinks are cheap. I personally think "filth" adds character. Jimmy's Corner: A Look at Bar That Trancends Time

At first glance you might not think anything of Jimmy's Corner. More than likely you will think that it's just another tourist trap in the heart of the city that never sleeps. You would be totally wrong too.

Jimmy's Corner is one of those bars that leaves a lasting imprint in your mind. Located just off Times Square, Jimmy's is a local haunt in a place where locals are as uncommon as the Mets winning the World Series. In fact, you might even just miss it if you weren't looking for it to begin with.

Once you get inside, it's like you walked back into times where New York City wasn't just a place, it was a hardcore attitude. The walls are adorned with boxing photos and memorabilia, you might even notice that a lot of them feature owner Jimmy Glenn, standing side by side with the greatest of all time; Muhammad Ali. Jimmy himself is one of the legendary trainers of an era that is now just a fond memory. A lot of the time you can see him at the bar chatting with customers and sharing a smile with those who come in for a drink.

As for the bar, expect a modest beer selection, but the atmosphere here is what makes it so special. One of the best parts of Jimmy's Corner is the jukebox itself. This isn't just one of the best jukes in the city, but it is also one of my all time favorites of anywhere. Containing mostly Jazz and Motown, you can expect to enjoy a drink while listening to one of the all time classics; "Midnight Train to Georgia" one minute, then a lively Jazz ensemble next. With its retro jukebox, and old boxing posters and photos on the wall, Jimmy's corner seems like it hasn't changed since its inception 30 some years ago. You might also notice that the prices seem stuck in the past too. $3 for a beer, $4 for a Jack Daniels and Ginger Ale (quite heavy on the Jack too I might add)? In Times Square of all places? Well, a drinkers fairy tale comes true in this story, because Jimmy's is as good as it gets.

So when you find yourself wandering down one of the rare hidden corners situated in one of the busiest and most visited neighborhoods in the world, be sure to be on the lookout for Jimmy's Corner. Come in, and enjoy the fact that not everything in New York City has to be so commercial, that there are still places here that thrive on the classic virtues of a bar; atmosphere, friendliness and affordability. Too often we lose sight of what a pub really is; a Public House, a place where you come to meet friends, and make new ones at the same time. Jimmy's still holds this true.

In keeping with the passion and love that owner Jimmy Glenn has for boxing, let me just say this: The corner in Boxing is a refuge for the bruised and battered warriors of the ring. Jimmy's Corner is a refuge for all of us that want simplicity in our bars. For that, myself (Adam), Todd and I Lush New York as a whole are forever grateful that Jimmy's Corner is there for us to enjoy.

Beer Review: London Pride

I had the privilege of having my first London Pride while living in the city it's named after. Fuller's Bewery is responsible for one of my favorite beers, and is located in Chiswick, West London. Literally living only a few miles away from the brewery, I was able to fall in love with a delicious full bodied bitter ale that is similar to Bass in flavor, just with that something extra that I always thought Bass was missing.

Upon moving back to the states, I had to say goodbye to "The Pride" as I had assumed it was just a treasure hidden in Britain, and I was facing the reality that my encounter with it might have only been a brief affair with deliciousness. To my delight, I was wrong. London Pride can be found in may places here in the states, you just have to look for it. Not the cheapest of beers, Fuller's London Pride is worth every penny it costs. New York City alone, you can find it hiding in specialty beer stores, local markets in the micro brew & import section, and even some of the nicer bars carry it in a bottle.

The beer is not aggressively bitter, but has a rich malty flavor accented by a variety of hops. Surprisingly, the hops are complimented so well by the thick malty base that the beer goes down very smooth. The aftertaste is pleasant as well and leaves you craving for more.

In London, this beer was served room temperature, something that I found to actually enhance its flavors and subsequently the ale was more enjoyable. Stateside however carries the stigma that warm beer is a "party foul", therefor London Pride is served cold. While I do recommend you trying it at it's best (room temperature), I understand people's issues with warm beer. That being said, I have no doubt that if you are a fan of ale's and bitters, you will enjoy London Pride non the less regardless of its temperature.

I had a great time at this little pub they have happy days, not happy
hours so 3 drinks for ten dollars tell 9pm. The bar tender was super
nice and there beer gardern was the perfect place to spend the
evening. To get there take the 7 to the 46th street bliss stop and the
bar is on 45th on the north side of the street.

I was walking with my girl friend in the heights today when i discovered La Casa Del Mofongo on 183rd and Saint Nick with it's happy hour of $1.49 Beers and $3.95 Liquor Specials on Monday threw Thursday from 4 to 8. If you like plantains and meat be sure to eat some Mofongo as you suck down some insanely cheap beers.
